Books!
I just got my hardbound copy of "FreeDarko's Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac" and drank a 40; I also have skipped out on doing anything at work this week, but who can blame a guy whose friends have all deserted him for parts unknown (this of course with the rare exception of those lovely people who are also stuck in relative, languid isolation with me here, and also Jeru the Damager/Killer Mike who are my personal saviors/heroes/martyrs for making it out here so soon). By goodness, this book is worth every fucking penny I dropped on the international shipping charges (good looks a1books, a highly recommended seller on Amazon.com); it's been said a billion fucking times on the blogospferico, but I am going to shout its praises from the rooftops in here in Smellva (copyright, Lisboa circa one month ago).
I'll link to their book's website again, because it's really well put together, but hey hey, my my, go buy this shit (books are still important, even if you can just get a pdf copy of this shit, its weight just feels nice in one's hands)
I AM NOT GETTING PAID FOR MY LIP SERVICES, BUT FOR THOSE IN THE KNOW I'VE GOT SOME DSLs...

Bullish on Ween
White Pepper, which derives its namesake from The Beatle's Albums "S/T (White Album)" & "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", is a fucking gem. You don't know exactly what to make of it, and by the time you think you've figured it out, you gotta turn the tape over and rewind that shit back (always a sign of the very best cassettes). In all honesty, the album seems to draw influence from other batshit insane works like Todd Rundgren's "A Wizard, a True Star", Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" (Just Kidding), The Brian Eno/David Bowie collabs or even 10cc (the most direct influence one could conjure up, I suppose) or even some latter day Led Zeppelin (if you just threw your shoe at the screen, I hope you don't get incarcerated). When you look at the sentence I just wrote, you might think I'm giving this some serious hype, well, I am, it's that good.
Ween hail from New Hope, Pennsylvania; a town known for the juxtaposition of biker bars, gay bars, and Bucks County tranquility (my boy Adrian Pacia might stab me in the neck if I didn't mention Bucks County Fencing, but parentheticals are all I can offer). I read once that they worked at the Mexican joint called "El Taco Loco", where I once consumed some mediocre nachos (the utilization of "Nacho Cheese" will also elicit such a response from yours truly), but an excellent taco, or 3; I think it's often best to stick with items that are in the name of the restaurant when unsure what to order.
You could buy a copy of White Pepper here, if somebody really wants a copy leave a comment or something.
Ok
Now that I'm absolutely positive that noone at the school I work at reads English at more than a third-grade level, I can finally rest easy at night: when I was younger, I always wondered why the PTA existed, or why people had to lobby for membership, etc; now it finally makes sense that an active civil society is the crux of raising standards, matter not how artificial these constructs may be. Here in Spain, parents come to their children's schools only for emergencies, to sew costumes for Christmas plays or to chain smoke cigarettes directly in front of 4 year olds.
Noam Chomsky famously wrote, "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously", just to prove a point that language is ridiculous, I think; with that in mind, I invite anyone who reads this, above a third-grade level, to offer their own take on the absurd nature of written English. Winner gets a prize in the mail (Offer good thru 12/31)!

Oh Shit!
For those of you who don't personally know my father, let me just say I'm sorry you haven't had the pleasure of crossing paths with a man of such mirth. One particularly brilliant nugget of wisdom the old man dropped in my lap once was that the final days of the Roman Empire were marked by the importance of spectator sport amid the collapsing pillars of society (economy, military might, etc...); juxtaposed, America seems to be at an intriguing point of comparison, or not, that's for someone with a more educated opinion to decide (too bad Halberstam's dead).
That said, I can't help but sport some minor wood for two phantastic signings over the last week or so: Raul Ibañez and Chan Ho Park are signed on for the 2009 season.
Billy Crystal was an NBA referee in a movie, and played the token gay on the late, great SOAP. Let's take a look at some footage, and compare the characters:
There you have it; I think he's much gayer when he's an nba ref.

Get ready for Maggette! (Note: This phrase comes second hand to me, as a response to the somewhat well known phenomenon of "Who want to sex Mutombo?" A story itself that is worthy of a short explanation for the sake of those not in the know.)
As rumor has it, one fateful night at a popular campus bar, Hoya star center Dikembe Mutombo, and his 7'+ wingspan, entered to a reception of starry eyed, but somewhat hesitant co-eds; shy, but approachable, The "Thirsty One", as myself and a close friend have always referred to him, had to find a way to break the ice with the ladies. What came next is somewhat anti-climactic if you've read the above, and or don't know who Mutombo is, or what that name means in the context of an NBA game. (A quick side note: Mutombo is a noted philanthropist in his native Congo, where he has built several hospitals and, in fact, is a licensed medical doctor himself. He also speaks upwards of 13 languages, and was hailed at the 2008 state of the union by President George W. Bush as a great "American tale") This early incarnation of what was to be one of the greatest defensive centers in NBA history, spread his wingspan, cocked his head and simply proposed, "Who want to sex Mutombo?"
Ok, now that I've wasted a portion of your life with this story, check out this fantastic music video by two of P-ton's finest:
For more information on Mutombo, you may want to consult some of my early posts back in July. Also you can contact me at alex.sugiura@gmail.com, because I am not ashamed to admit that I could talk at length about this man's greatness (Mutombo for President of the African Union).

Bribery
I had a legit cup of coffee this morning. Then the bartender, while attempting to consolidate the "tomate natural", squeezed the dregs of a bottle all over his Dolce & Gabanna T-Shirt. I don't think he got the joke when I smiled and said, "now you know how I feel everyday of the week."
I have been riding the NYT coattails hard this week, but for good reason. It should come as no surprise, then, that I will link to another great statistics-laden, but altogether endearing piece by one Charles Blow; best name in the biz as far as this japanese-jew is concerned (editors note: It's true, I'm not even remotely Mexican). READ HERE
In other news:
-Mehmet Okur will hopefully, one day, elicit offers similar to those extended to Visanthe Shianco; via deadspin.com.
-Some asshole thought it would be a good idea to green light a film about an awkward teenager who works at an amusement park where he has the time of his life before heading off to college. FUCK THAT! (Caveat: this is only because a good friend of mine has a much better idea of how to make the amusement park film. Hint: Slackers, pedophiles and contraband)
-Meatballs is still the best camp movie to get referenced in Wet Hot American Summer.
-Three worst teams in the NBA: LA, Boston and Cleveland. Wait, scratch that, it's the opposite, but still it felt good when I wrote it.
-Drunk jews all dance like a Costanza:

Let's get David Brooks fired and get Doug Glanville to write weekly columns in the NYT Op-Ed:
no offense DB, but you've fallen off worse than Raja Bell over the last couple of seasons.
Like, seriously, what the fuck is this?
Today's Op-ed.

"Hollywood" Cole Hamels has this to say about the New York Met's performance over the last couple of seasons:
They are "choke artists"
They are "choke artists"
A handjob's a man's job, your job's a blowjob
I think I try to title every post with that phrase and always back out at the last minute. Not today!
Before I start blabbing about things I know nothing about, I want to enlighten you with a link of great interest. Before that, though, I want to let you know that if you asked me which former Ivy-League educated, center-fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies would be writing an op-ed for the NYT, I would have said Lenny Dykstra, and I would have been completely wrong (I don't think he actually went to college, but deadspin.com will inform you handily about his post-baseball financial successes, even amid the crisis! [quick caveat; did anyone wad more tobacco in to their mouth over the course of 20 years than Lenny? I'm gonna say no]. Penn Quaker alum Doug Glanville would be the answer: why is he writing about Tyra Banks? Perhaps more important, why is it the featured op-ed on the NYT website? Life is a wonderful mystery sometimes: EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT
We are all very lucky people; in light of the recent economic 'crisis' that the world marketplace seems to be facing, it's nice to take a step back and laugh at how scared rich people are. What's going to come of Obama's presidency? There has been a substantial number of press releases from the "transition team" hinting at a serious initiative to restore the crumbling infrastructure of our fine country. Then Detroit got bailed out, and Tom Friedman put it best:As I think about our bailing out Detroit, I can’t help but reflect on what, in my view, is the most important rule of business in today’s integrated and digitized global market, where knowledge and innovation tools are so widely distributed. It’s this: Whatever can be done, will be done. The only question is will it be done by you or to you. Just don’t think it won’t be done. If you have an idea in Detroit or Tennessee, promise me that you’ll pursue it, because someone in Denmark or Tel Aviv will do so a second later.. My chief worry from the Obama white house, like Kennedy before him, is the pragmatic political shift towards the center; being centrist, while good in the short run, does not lead to innovative policy measures, which is exactly what we need.
Another recent NYT op-ed made open fun of the rise in popularity of briliant historian, Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals =, which I believe is an important book, for giving us, perhaps, a false sense of hope for the strategy being employed, and for what it all means. Don't get me wrong, I think the president-elect has done an impeccable job with the transition to a new era, after 20 years of two families running shit it's amazing how he's breathed life back in to the executive branch with such alacrity and charm. Yet right there, charm, I again am worried that we are getting too enamored with an ideal president, instead of the real thing. This is why anyone who reads Team of Rivals should have to also read David Halberstam's The Best and The Brightest, which, through exhausting details (in the 20th anniversary introduction, Halberstam will proudly tell you in his own words) relays an amazing story of how so many brilliant minds could have corroborated on such a cluster fuck as our involvement in Vietnam. The Sam Rayburn quip alone makes the book worth buying, but maybe you might also get excited about a newer addition in which John Mccain writes a fantastic foreword.
That's about all the pseudo-intellectual garbage I can stomach, so everyone have a great weekend!
Also:
-Holy Shit! J-Rich, Jared Dudley and a future second round pick to the Suns!
-Antithetical reaction to the above: Javaris Crittendon to the Wizards! (dude had mad hype back in his ATL days, maybe you should all be patient with him since Arenas will probably not be back any time soon)
-And while we're on that topic, is there a more frustrating star in the internet age than Gil? Dude's clearly one of the most, if not the, fan friendly guys ever; even when he's blatantly stealing comedian's material (I guess shame on us for not calling him out on it immediately, or letting the guy who came up with the material in the first place speak his mind) or coming back too soon from his injuries to further stymie what was shaping up to be one of the most invigorating, idiosyncratic styles of play we have ever seen.
-Other players who were unique flowers, but never got rings:
"Pistol" Pete Maravich
Tom Chambers
Tom "Gugs" Gugliotta
Arvydas Sabonis
Jorge Garbajosa
-Now that Obama is president-elect, can we make cross-racial player comparisons?
-Bill Simmons interviews David Stern on his most recent podcast, number 100 (wow, he has a face for radio), and it's pretty interesting if you are obsessed with the NBA or with the voice of an old Jewish lawyer/typical suburban Bostonian.

Sometimes
Sometimes you stumble upon something so great that you can't help but want to share it with everyone you know.
Moloko's biography on allmusic.com
Does anyone who reads my blog read freedarko? That shit is baffling me as of late, not that it ever made any sense anyway, but the illusion used to be so titillating and now they just reek of a crew that is resting on their laurels after writing a rather impressive book (which you should buy, because your trust fund can take the 15 dollar hit and because we'll be talking about in 20 years). They can't keep name dropping Halberstam and expect me to blindly follow their slacker tendencies; all I'm saying is there is no fire at all in their rhetoric, their generic take on the Mchale-Wittman carousel was reminiscent of the time George W. Bush choked on a pretzel; so many opportunities for liberal wit to shine, but instead we get nonplussed nonsense.
While we're talking basketball here's some things to consider:
-I was serious in the earlier post about voting in the all-star game; even if Yi and his cohorts get their way, we can at least say we tried, even if Jemele Hill is ALWAYS RIGHT; although can you really trust anyone who compares a figure in sports to Adolf Hitler (unless it's Adolph Rupp, then it might be somewhat warranted)?
-The Nets play the Knicks tonight; while it's certainly not on par with a Bobcats-Timberwolves matchup, I, for one, am excited to see D'antoni get dookied on by Lawrence Frank, by far the nerdiest looking head coach in professional sports.

-Dwight Howard is part of a continuum of "Big men who are able to dominate through a devastating combination of athleticisim and bulk". Amare Stoudemire reminds me of Dominique Wilkins; every day that jumper is going to improve. Also he's got a 32" waistline, that's a great way to preserve one's sexy.
-Life After Death is directly inspired by All Eyez on Me, discuss.
-Paul Millsap is a hero of mine.
-Blake Griffin, Oklahoma University's hulking, mullato (is this un-pc?) power forward, is a consensus top 3 pick in next year's draft. The comparison that continually arises is a freakishly athletic Carlos Boozer. Does anyone remember watching Boozer at Duke, and thinking the guy was a fucking mongoloid? Am I crazy? God, I hated those teams; even if everyone felt a little bad when Jay Williams got in that motorcycle crash, I was actually pulling for him to make the Nets roster this year, but alas Keyon Dooling's calling card is taking up empty space.
-Mabyner Hilario will never be called "Nene" on this blog, NEVER.
-Spencer Hawes can dunk, apparently. This is news to me. Just kidding, I think this kid is actually deserving of his top-ten pick status. Call me crazy, but he will have a much better career than the Nephew of the guy who founded the Beach Boys.
-Jerry Sloan is a lot like the Canadian power pop group that bears the same name; the look on your face is telling me you don't believe me. Might as well get to learning about this band that you ought to know about anyway: One of Canada's finest.

You Need To Take a Look at The Other Side
Hello!
You're back for more I see.
Some important developments here in Huelva;
-I have become the master of smothering loaves of bread in olive oil, thyme, chopped fresh basil, a pinch of salt, pepper, and (1 out of every 5 times) some chopped garlic in our shitty easy-bake oven and eating it when I get back from work.

-Todo el mundo está fucking loco por cerdo frito! (Rough translation: Everyone is going fucking crazy for fried pork in these parts!)

-No pacific islander group is more marginalized in the eyes of the Spaniards then our fine friends the Filipinos. What's that? You don't know anything about the Philippines? For shame, for shame my friend.
Brush up on the facts, motherfucker.
-Taka you can make fun of me all you want; Kate Mooney, and her theoretical co-conspirators had a brilliant fucking idea. Read about it here.
AYAYAYAYAYAY: Yi Jianlin might get voted in by China as a starter for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star game. I am no jingo, hell I barely got my absentee vote in the mail on time, but I'll be damned if I will remain mum about the ludicrous nature of the all-star game in the globalized age of the NBA. Let's stop this from happening, one vote at a time (maybe you should all tell your grandparents about this, it could be like Obama 2.0 (2.5 if you count the Al Franken debacle, yes I said it let's find new and exciting reasons to be American)

NEWHOUSE!!!!
So if you aren't a regular at Newhouse's Bushwick blog then you are a fucking fool.
More important is his utilization of the film Roger Dodger to illustrate his point about struggles with relationships. That movie really hit home hard for me; a verbose male protagonist, prone to selfish delusions, takes his nerdy nephew under his wing for a night of debauch in NYC. The results are much darker and less slapstick than the average viewer may hope; but to quote Newhouse, "my humor is darker than [that of] the starting center for the Celtics." (that would be Kendrick Perkins)

-Let's blow up the Chinese Basketball Association

Update
Getting away from the dirty provincial capital over the long weekend was a real pleasure; Córdoba is kind of a piece of shit town itself, nobody picks up after their dogs, but what are you gonna do?
Banagher is an "Irish Pub" located a short walk outside of the center, where Theo, Pablo and myself enjoyed several delicious drinks consisting of blackberry liquer, red wine and coca-cola; I'm pretty sure there is a white, powdered equivalent of this drink that I nay cannot afford on a teacher's assistant salary.
There is a delicious dish known as a "plao" that consists of basmati rice, salad, falafel and sauce; best 3.50 euro I spent all weekend.
WHY HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN PHIL HARTMAN WORLD?!?!!? WHY?!?!?!

Fukhit
I put together a bunch of tracks in honor of Día de la constitución which falls on December 6th. That's right motherfuckers 30 years of spanish democracy; which means we can see more movies like this getting full blown releases:
Some Rhythm
Ok, I lied earlier. I didn't put together tracks in honor of the holiday. But perhaps you assholes who may read this from time to time would like to hear my quasi-demo tape. Why quasi you ask? One reason and one reason alone: there's no use in taking anything too seriously if you don't have to. With that in mind, it is my new found plan to adopt the word's of Allen Alda in Little Miss Sunshine. Anyhoo, here it is, my first real try at making music that doesn't elicit terrifying visions of Pablo Neruda shaking his taco booty.
Secret's out, J.A. Adande is the best basketball writer on the planet.Noone else has had the ingenuity to describe the Starbury saga as tragicomedy. Keep up the good work my man.

I am terrible at this job, but perhaps you will all get a look at what an Oberlin education can do for a mediocre alum.
If the labrynth that is acquiring internet access can ever be exited, I promise to give away all my worldly possessions via the blog.

The NBA is hard to come by in butt fuck Spain, so my thoughts are drifting ten years ago when a great hero came to the Meadowlands to spread joy and wealth:
Read about it here.

Best NYT Obama article I've seen in weeks
I think we should have wars be fought by leaders, but instead of killing each other with guns and knives and the like, they can just embarrass each other through brilliant pranks that are caught on film and the masses can vote on for the sake of popularity.
Ashton Kutcher and Pepe Jeans are harbingers for the death of many things.

A sobering interview from 11 years ago between Nina Simone and some douchebag interviewer.

So moving on, here's that album that a special someone asked for by a certain band who is most certainly not from Barcelona.

Hi Mom!
So anyways, I'm headed to Portugal for the weekend, but I didn't want to dissapoint Kaitlin Barrer, so I'm leaving you all with something to listen to in the mean time.
As soon as it uploads, which might be a couple of months from now.

Ten Years After
The Blues is a funny genre in that no matter how much it changes, it can always be reduced to an incredibly simple formula. Electric Blues also abides by this rule; don't let those fuckers in the Black Keys fool you, ever since B.B. King and Howlin Wolf stepped onstage in Chicago shit has changed.
Alvin Lee, Lead Guitarist and Vocalist, of Ten Years After seems dutifully aware of this situation. Most critics regard the album Watt as mediocre at best, citing another album Cricklewood Green, as a more inventive and complete work of Electric Blues. Since we are all entitled to our own opinions on these matters, I thought I'd let you all decide for yourselves. So without futher hullabaloo, I present it to you.

Arthur
Maybe you really enjoyed watching PBS as a child; Mom and Dad were not willing to wash away your mind in the wild seas of basic cable packages, or for the lucky few with premium access, an eddy that would make Whoopi Goldberg blush.

Perhaps you have an utter fascination with television programs that never aired in the year 1969. You went to a 4 year university where, for a little while after the fact, you're wondering when you're ever gonna leave the womb. Is all vague writing just projections of the self? Don't worry yourself with these questions too much, who has the time to fool around when there are real CRISES out there to be solved!?!!? Wait, we can't solve them immediately, and there is crazy shit going down worldwide. Damn.
Might as well relax and take this for a spin;

Growth
Huelva has its fair share of problems; I'll "highlight" the seemingly worst aspect of living here, which is pollution.

There is a growing group of concerned citizens about the amount of runoff the factories are aloud to stream in to the local rivers; affecting the water supply, as well as damaging wildlife habitats.
With a team like Recreativo in town, it does seem like something is wrong with this place.

The bigger they come
Ten Talking points:
-The Atlanta Hawks are looking good because of defense. Perhaps the influence of Randolph Morris cannot be ignored for too long; even if he has 3 DNP-CDs on the year.
-Aaron Brooks has real talent, and everyday I wish he could just be inserted in to the starting lineup and replace Rafer Alston.
-Puerto Rico has produced many fine NBA players over the years, but none of them have won NBA championships.
-Japan has produced one NBA player, and he was a pretty mediocre third string point guard.
-There was a ridiculous amount of jewery in the NBA back in the day.
-Spain is producing NBA players at an alarming rate; Casual masturbation to Ricky Rubio vids all day it seems.
-Has Eastern Europe hit its peak of NBA ready big men? Mile Ilic, who plays ok for the ACB squad Unicaja, just might miss his time in East Rutherford.
-Stanford produced less douchebag white-stars on the court than Duke has in the last 20 years, but that's not really saying all that much.
-This might just be the year that Amaré Stoudemire drops 60+ in a game.
-Greg Oden is gonna be ooook.

WHAT IS THAT YOU SAY!'!??!?
Iverson to Detroit; I feel like this is a trade that was speculated on two years ago when the Nuggets pulled the trigger as well. Imagine, if you will, Billups and Mcdyess in Philly with Brand, Iguadola, Thaddeus Young, and Lou Williams. Damn, Ed Stefanski, you're still doing a good job.
In other news, it turns out there is an election today. So if you haven't voted, then we have a problem. In other news, civil society is due to replace government any day now. If you are all having problems coping with the economy and other crises of self, I suggest you rent the movie King of the Hill; while unrelated to the Mike Judd serial cartoon, it offers an intriguing glimpse at life during the great depression for a middle class family.
I watched the EuroLeague top 10 on ESPN.com and I think that the highlight package was designed to make it seem like the NBA is light years ahead. The number 1 highlight was a guy from Maccabi Tel Aviv dunking uncontested off a decent dime from Carlos Arroyo; I think Matt Bonner has made more exciting plays than this, this worries me greatly.
Are MAcs becoming more vulnerable to online viruses? Let's do some reading!
Thanks about.com!
The teachers here at my school are all excited for the possiblity of an Obama White House. They seem him as being able to facilitate a dialogue between the US and abroad. Can he succeed in the same way with the American people? I think so!
Two takeaway lessons from the election:
-Sound Bytes are a thorn in any aspiring politicians side, but finally great speeches are making a comeback!
-Pick your issue, just make sure to define it.

I need one of these.
Here are some things that everyone should know about Huelva:
-Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney came here back in the day and erected dozens of sculptures around the city.
-The East Side is where the action is.
-There is an old man who lives in a shack under a highway overpass named, el portugés, who sells bikes, but it is unclear when he will have a bike for you. He will happily demonstrate with a magnet that he only sells frames made out of quality alloys.
-There is a nightclub called FAma, where I have yet to go, because I cannot bring myself to stay up late listening to music that is popular here.
-We had a party on Halloween, it was a great success.

Dead Eye
JJ Reddick 0-8 from the field on the season.
Adam Morrison can rest a little easier at night.
Gerald Wallace, like Kevin Garnett before him, seems like an old man inside of an incredibly athletic young man's body.
Walter Hermman: Doesn't eat empanadas stateside, but prefers the NBA to the ACB one-hundo percent.
Hilton Armstrong dunked the ball several times today; the hill people of New Orleans embraced their back-up center's gall. I envision the Hornets trying to get Chandler as much rest as possible so that they can make and sustain a big push at the end of the season.
Greg Oden should smoke some weed like Bill Walton still probably does.
Rodney Harrison's career RIP; journalists can't take away the championships, try as they may with their creepy elfish hands.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Halloween
Halloween was conceived in the womb of The Mexican Día de los muertes with the seed of American consumerism. As the zygote took shape in the latter part of the 20th century, it became imperative that all children, and their parent's money, created some type of costume for parades, and the much hallybalooed trick-or-treat.
The night before Halloween is often referred to in circles of 13 year old boys as "mischief night"; an opportunity to TP your least favorite Spanish teacher's house, or perhaps to smoke crack in the back alleway of the old bowling alley.
Gay people love Halloween. So do old people. Coincidence? I think not.
Twenty-Somethings and their elder/younger ilk often get intoxicated to the point of public costume removal at various parties with various themes by which costumes are composed.
Spain loves halloween for all the same reasons America does, except that instead of Candy, people hand out anti-communist pamphlets, since that's all the old folks got left in this place!
Someone chug a jaeger bomb for me and my brethren...

NBA SEASON HAS BEGUN!
I will probably not catch a single game the entire season, since I don't have a TV and live in a booty ass part of Spain, but let me say these 5 things and then go teach kids English or something to that effect;
-J. O'neal says he 'feels good', and it shows. That drive where he threw down left handed was thought to be a thing of the past. Also, Bosh is my darkhorse all-nba first team pick.
-The Nets have a better record than the Sixers, for now.
-Damn...D'antoni is a genius. I expect Crawford to return to form before we know it.
-N.O. will win a butt-ton of games.
-Baby Bulls survived the terrible twos; this is going to be a great NBA year.

Banking on a Myth
The word crisis is getting tossed around like an old Wilson Football in the parking lot of a Eagles game these days; it's not pretty. So, where the hell do we go from here? I can't help but think that we've all got to get up off our asses and do something, but what about the fearful 'pussies' that populate such a decidedly large portion of the population (myself included by writing these very words)? Is the army really such a bad thing? Yes. I heard from a friend recently that his older sister, armed with a Master's from Harvard's Divinity school, is looking for work as a secretary, and even then she's struggling to get hired. Qualifications don't really seem to mean shit, and all I see on the horizon is red, red, red. So are we in a crisis, or is it just that, for the youth of today, that we haven't been mobilized for a cause?
As the speed of information increases, over saturation will naturally follow. I'm not sure if this is a viable source of apathy among young people; our parent's generation may beg to differ, but if they can't figure out how to turn the fucking TV on, then they can't talk shit. There will always be insecure, egocentric fucks running around talking about as many things as they can fit inside their petty minds. To make things worse, there is no universal way of labeling someone as any of these things; one man's apathy is another man's herculean struggle. This is why we gotta drop the bullshit, and start making some real shit, all of us.
What this entails, as far as my hypocritical, narcissistic self is concerned, is not feeling so sorry for ourselves; historically we've got it really good, oh and don't we know it. Op-Eds have been flying hot off the presses for a good while now about America's chance to save the world through innovation. I think that is on point, and I recommend anyone to brush up on some Thomas Friedman, David Brooks, Bob Herbert, and a certain Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krugman if they have the chance; that shit's free anyways.
So innovation can come in any shape or form imaginable (or perhaps not previously conceived). How about the sex toy industry? How about the need for a cigarette that has vitamins and minerals? How about films about the sex lives of insects? What's that, Isabella Rosselini has already innovated?
And now for something completely different:
Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Do it because I'm a Phillies fan.

Churros Con Chocolate
Fried Dough: a Photo Essay

Caveat: Breakfast doesn't exist in Spain; at least as I have known it my whole life. Instead of a hearty meal from which one can find the energy to function, at least until lunch time has been usurped by fried dough, a coffee, or a piece of toast, sometimes with jam. You will be hard pressed to find anyone selling a dish like bacon and eggs, let alone a breakfast sandwich. Even icons of American fast-food dining like McDonald's and Burger King cater their menus to that of the native customs. Maybe I miss the burrito bar more and more every day, maybe the food here is also really good. But if the great war heroes of the golden age have taught me anything, it's that complaining about everything is the best way to stay alive, keeps the mind active.
Real World Update!: US has missiles aplenty.
Aside: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a great read, but don't sleep on the screen adaptation that stars Tim Roth (under appreciated), Gary Oldman (Masterful) and Richard Dreyfuss (closet genius)

I miss everybody.

Blatantly ripping off David Foster Wallace, too soon? Also, if you care to comment, who is your favorite author who uses footnotes? For my money it is jorge Luis borges, hands down the most clever in this regard, maybe I'm wrong.
Still an excellent read, even if Sox Nation Douchebaggery reaches appaling heights known only by cheeseheads, Cubs Fans and Phillies phans (yes I said it...)
But credit must be given where credit is due: Simmons is one of the titans of web-based sports writing, does that mean he swallows his children in fear of being usurped? You betcha.

Who is the sexiest team in the NBA? Is He Weird?
Sexiest NBA Free Agent: Matt Bonner: La Pelirroja
Sexiest team (Preseason)? I vote New Orleans Hornets:
Mo Peterson: Grainy Sexy
Chris Paul: I can imagine when he was at Wake Forest, many a college fan thought of CP3 too have an ego to this effect.
Cockknocking aside, Paul has that dedicated Christian fire that all fairweather fans can rally behind.

Tyson Chandler: Dominicano for life methinks

David West: Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines (That's a fact, Jack!)
Raphael is cool but crude (Gimme a break!)
Michaelangelo is a party dude (Party!)
Watch Here

Hilton Armstrong: Land Before Time Sexy

Devin Brown: Pharaoh Sexy

Rasual Butler: La Salle Explorer Sexy

Melvin Ely: B-Movie Star Sexy

Mike James: Just Happy to be here Sexy

Sean Marks: Sexiest man alive Sexy

Peja Stojakovic: Vlade's sexy dance partner

Julian Wright: Blessed by the Good Lord Sexy

There you have it
A rational explanation for how to correctly cheer for your hometown team if you're from the greater Gulf Area; unless you like the Rockets, Spurs, Magic, Heat, and/or the Memphis Grizzlies. Unfortunately only one can team can hold down the honor of sexiest team in the NBA.

I'm not Saying
With the first weekend drawing to a close here in Huelva, I have learned a smattering of life facts:
1) Huelva, both the city and the province, have a cancer rate per-capita that is 4 times higher than almost any other part of Europe.
2) Gypsies won't steal your things, necessarily, if you can prove to him that you are an even more random mixture of disparate cultural influences.
3)Euros are not dollars, they are like megabucks; as in they make you feel megabroke when you ain't got too many.
4)Spaniards get really familiar after they've been drinking; I'm talking men, not women.
5)Big Ups to Martin Raboteau
Outspaced-Super Furry Animals

RIP Paul Newman
Piso is huge, Venetians are chill.
Some Food for thought:
I'd let this motherfucker sell me random ass organic products any old day of the week.

Hey Aqualón!
I'm pretty sure anyone, who's ever watched Anchorman, heard of Jethro (Jasha) Tull, or put two and two together has uttered that above phrase upon entering Huelva. The poshest ir de compras in Huelva is located right on the port; buttressing the Dior kiosk is the biggest Zara store mein eyes have ever seen. The Phone House employees looked sad and lonely, and gave me the eye, the brown eye, so I bukowskid her.
Huelva is hot, hot, hot! Everyday it gets up to 27 degrees Celcius, for all you that don't 'habla español', use the following math formula to get the equivalent in Fahrenheit; 9/5C+32=F or 5/9F-32=C.
Wowwie Wow Wow!
In other news, the Italianos speak the English better than the Spanish; which runs wholly counterintuitive to what us Americanos might imagine.
Drinking gazpacho out of a glass is ill.
Pressed Cheese Sandwiches are a delight.
It will be even nicer when I'm chilling in a piso (apt.)
