Mj's Dead Momma!

No Twitter account, too many words.

Maybe the great flood that Noah warned us all of was the number of MJ tributes that will come out in the coming weeks (you could say Rihanna was timely with her direct reference to Mj recently, others might say it is wholly unsurprising that poppa Joe Jackson outlived his youngest son.

It's ridiculous, buttfucking ridiculous. I would say this should not outshadow Ed Mcmahon's passing. This is way sadder than when Heath Ledger died.

NBA DRAFT, instant tributes? Finna find out.

PIERRE MENARD, AUTHOR OF QUIXOTE

JOOOOOOEEEEEY: BOB Dylan's Desire plays while you read this.

After three cultishly revered albums with Organized Konfusion, underground legend Pharoahe Monch cut a solo deal with Rawkus and delivered his debut, Internal Affairs, in late 1999. Both Monch and Rawkus seemed to want to push their music farther above ground, and some longtime followers were shocked to hear a harder, angrier, more profane Monch, who seemed to be courting a more thugged-out audience. But it's a reinvention that doesn't compromise his high lyrical standards, making Internal Affairs a success on its own terms. Sounding like it was sampled from a monster-movie soundtrack, the club smash "Simon Says" sets the tone for the album; Monch delivers rapid-fire, intricately rhymed lines in between shouts of "get the f*ck up!" and "girls, rub on your titties!" It proved to be the most successful crossover bid of Monch's career, and much of the rest of Internal Affairs manages to straddle the underground/mainstream divide surprisingly well. Even when he's just giving shout-outs to Queens, or enlisting guests like Canibus and M.O.P. to help pummel a track into submission, Monch lives up to his reputation as one of hip-hop's most technically skilled MCs. Nowhere is this balancing act more evident than on "Rape," a rather disquieting extended metaphor for his mastery of hip-hop (other MCs just "ain't f*ckin' it right"). A more benign theme track is "Official," whose carefully constructed barrage of sports references demonstrates the cleverness that made Monch a cult legend. Not everything sits well together — the sophomoric "The Ass" is an odd way to lead into the love song "The Light," the Organized Konfusion reunion "God Send," and the reflective "The Truth," which features guest appearances by Common and Talib Kweli. But in terms of bringing an underappreciated hip-hop great to a (somewhat) wider audience, Internal Affairs generally gets it right.

NOTES ON A MULTICULTURALISM TALK

Arjun Appadurai, world renowned anthropologist, deals with the cultural dimensions of globalization in works such as "Modernity at Large" and "Fear of Small Numbers."

LINK TO THE KULTURHAUS in Berlin

TOO CLOSE & TOO FAR

-Yesterday's strangers are today's neighbor; the geography of daily life has changed.

We are becoming all at once too far and too close to each other in this increasingly global age;

TOO FAR

Increasing isolation (the growth of urban areas magnifies this) (NOT JUST THE INVIDIVIDUAL, GROUPS ARE ISOLATING THEMSELVES, but on the basis of what I ask)

TOO CLOSE

Today's global cultural flows have a curious inner-contradiction; the old barriers of ethnicity, nationalism, religion and other ****FUNDAMENTAL**** issues are impeding/slowing the development of common ground cultural flows (internet, art, jobs, etc.)

MULTICULTURALISM IS OUTDATED

Too 'soft' politically
Too weak intellectually

Multiculturalism has had recent value, historically; a benign (safe, soft) lens by which to discuss cross-border traffic in the neo-liberal economic framework (big market, aka western europe and THE US OF A)

MASS ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS (TERRORISM)
NATURAL DISASTERS
ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

All these things are tied in to the political, social and humanitarian issues that MULTICULTURALISM has never had a real answer for, in general offering nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders.

CONVIVIALITY

Living together in a way that is enriching in certain ways, while leaving certain key choices to the invididual. (UTOPIA?!?!) In the world we seek diversity is
encouraged,
sustained
and enhanced

DIALOGUE

Risks: No one can enter a dialogue without risk

The other party may not understand you; we try to be as inter-subjective (understand as much as possible the other side of the story) as possible, but there are always limitations and things that get lost in translation.

the other party may understand you all too well; one's ulterior motives, what your REAL preferences are (what makes you not them), prevent you from placing emphasis on the us.

A PROBLEM

Let's take a look at the series of binary oppositions (Christian and Muslim world, et. al) that rule our lives (itself in a binary opposition with death; the 1 0 boy-o! because1 + 0 = 1, this is the only math that I really fundamentally believe in):

-Religion
-Language
-Hometown

GLOBALISM FURTHER PLACES EMPHASIS ON SOCIETY's INTERNAL DIVISIONS

There are basic things that differentitate the me from you, things that are set in stone like the ten commandments; WE CAN't FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE AS HUMAN BEINGS, we are limited, fractured creatures. SO, THEN WHAT TO DISCUSS?!?!?!

-With CONVIVIALITY as a general end-goal for which the means of DIALOGUE are employed; we go about the act of compromise for the ever greater good (Feeling good, feeling great!)

BUT!

DIALOGUE MUST OCCUR WITH BOTH THE OTHER AND THE SELF (A duality of the invidividual HIGHER ORDER THINKING [let's take drugs!])

So, there must be a constant renewal of the self

Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations (ATTACHED); is a theory that the world is becoming more and more divided through a series of binary oppositions (IT WAS ALWAYS LIKE THIS, but with an increasingly connected world, there become more and more areas of polarization (HATE AND LOVE, this usually leads to violence, we're violent creatures; so, how do we fight through our anger, our embarrassment, our disappointment in ourselves; I PERSONALLY think it is through something beautiful that can allow you to leave the self temporarily. I can only achieve this through playing music, maybe by writing notes, these notes are pretty fucking good, huh? Must've been a good talk; I hope you don't need a translator to read this effectively.

WHAT ARE THE INTERNAL DEBATES?

THE RISKS OF DIALOGUE REAR THEIR UGLY HEADS

Selectivity; we don't share all our humanity all of the time.

URBAN POVERTY

60% of the world will be living in cities by some date that I didn't write down (speculation, doesn't mean toooo much to this boy-o)

THIS MEANS MORE AND MORE URBAN POOR AKA SLUMDWELLERS

COSMPOLITANISM FROM BELOW

-A compulsory (involuntary [produced without being provoked by an other]) kind of cosmopolitan culture comes from these slums ( you're seeing the transmission already from AMERICA's URBAN POOR to other's music and style (AKA BASEBALL HATS in Kreuzberg)

-Multi-lingual; poor people in places like India where there is extremely high linguistic diversity are finding common ground through the market, maybe.

1/2 of the World's Ubran population will be in these kinds of slums.

THEY accomplish this new shared global cosmopolitanism through the internet, the visibility of stars in movies, sports, etc.; it is without any of the economic benefits that allow traditional cosmopolitanism to develop, aka people like me who grow up because they come in to a little bit of money.

This means local more and more becomes global; a butterfly flapping it's wings in venezuela won't cause a tornado in West Texas, but this is all conected at something deeper I tell myself...

THE URBAN POOR ARE FASCINATING!

They are performing great experiments in dialogue (demonstrating the risks!)

WRAPPING UP

CHANGING IDEAS OF CITIZENSHIP

Building our society on conviviality and dialogue rather than territoriality.

A HARD ROAD TO HOPE

IF WE ARE TWO DISTINCT 'I's

ME You
I I

The common ground is what we're standing on (It's about the environment, dude. THERE IS A NEW CRISIS LOOMING IN THE INTERNET[what if it gets overpolluted and everyday people can't even use it properly, we gotta find a way to be more efficient with our usage of space; AM I A FUCKING HYPOCRITE, or AM I JUST ON MY WAY; I have hope...)

Mynah Birds

I'm thinking at this exact moment about Rick James and Neil Young's ill-fated vocal group the Mynah Birds. If you listen to standout classic, sampled and retopping the chart funk like "Superfreak" and "Mary Jane" you hear a guy who could play his ass off on the bass on top of having an original and impressive vocal dynamic range.

Allmusic.com's take on the lifes and times of Dave Chappelle's misfortunate victim/accomplice in modern comic times.

In the late '70s, when the fortunes of Motown Records seemed to be flagging, Rick James came along and rescued the company, providing funky hits that updated the label's style and saw it through into the mid-'80s. Actually, James had been with Motown earlier, though nothing had come of it. After growing up in Buffalo and running away to join the Naval Reserves, he ran away from the Navy to Toronto, where he was in a band with future Buffalo Springfield members Neil Young and Bruce Palmer, and with Goldy McJohn, later of Steppenwolf. As the Mynah Birds, they signed to Motown and recorded, though no record was ever released.

James had a journeyman's career playing bass in various groups before signing again to Motown as an artist, songwriter, and producer. His first single, "You and I" (May 1978), topped the R&B charts and reached the pop Top 40. "Mary Jane" (September 1978) was another hit. Both were on James' debut album, Come Get It! (June 1978), which went gold. Subsequent efforts were not as successful, though Bustin' Out of L Seven (January 1979) featured the R&B hit "Bustin' Out" (April 1979). James returned to form with the number one R&B hit "Give It to Me Baby" (March 1981), featured on the million-selling Street Songs (April 1981), which also featured the hit "Super Freak."

James turned his production attention to resuscitating the career of the Temptations, recently returned to Motown, and "Standing on the Top" (April 1982), credited to the Temptations featuring Rick James, was an R&B Top Ten. (He also produced recordings by Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls.) James' follow-up to Street Songs was the gold-selling Throwin' Down (May 1982), which featured the hit "Dance Wit' Me." The title song of Cold Blooded (August 1983) became James' third R&B number one, and the album also featured his hit duet with Smokey Robinson, "Ebony Eyes." James' greatest-hits album Reflections (August 1984) featured the new track "17" (June 1984), which also became a hit. Glow (April 1985) contained Top Ten R&B singles in the title track and "Can't Stop," which was featured in the summer movie blockbuster Beverly Hills Cop. The Flag (June 1986) featured the hit "Sweet and Sexy Thing" (May 1986).

James left Motown for the Reprise division of Warner Bros. Records as of the album Wonderful (July 1988), which featured his number one R&B hit "Loosey's Rap," on which he was accompanied by rapper Roxanne Shante. Nevertheless, his "punk funk" didn't seem to rest comfortably with the trend toward rap/hip-hop. In 1989, James charted briefly with a medley of the Drifters hits "This Magic Moment" and "Dance With Me." In 1990, MC Hammer scored a massive hit with "U Can't Touch This," which consisted of his rap over the instrumental track of "Super Freak." That should have made for a career rebirth, but James was plagued by drug and legal problems that found him more frequently in court and in jail rather than in the recording studio. The majority of his legal woes behind him, James returned in 1997 with Urban Rapsody, which didn't yield any hits but was well accepted by critics. Rick James died of a heart attack on August 6, 2004, at his Los Angeles home.

The Los Angeles Lakers are your 2009 NBA champions.

The Magic redeemed their 1994 squad that got swept by the dream shake and other such tools of the trade, by winning a single game.

My preseason predictions didn't tell us much of anything, other than predicting Al Harrington to the Knicks (nice) and putting Joakim Noah's somewhat suspect street cred/douchebag duality in to its proper CEntral New Jersey Prep School context.

So of course everyone shows Shaquille O'neal's twitter; this finals is somehow all about him. And the Cleveland trade talks? BOOOOOORING!!!!!

Tweet Stuff

So ESPN has a big front page thing on what NBA players are tweeting; it suspiciously reminds me of what Bethlehem Shoals was doing at the baseline for some time now. When reached for comment freedarko said:
That's a tough one. Baseline wasn't the first place to spotlight player twits, but we certainly curated them harder, and with more of a distinct sensibility, than places that just looked for news-worthy stuff or JOKEZ. THis is somewhere between the two, no?

Free Market Irritation

Ok, I get it; there are a frightening number of analysts doing NFL related things these days; Goodel read Orwell and thought, oh the access...meanwhile, idiots like me complain of Mike Breen, Mike Tirico and cheap Mike Tyson cameos in "big-time hollywood comedies". Is the NBA even popular enough for us to need 'pay-per-pal' announcing styles.

On another front; fuck student loans.

I think that instead of paying back a clear as day fuck you with a fist kind of way company, we could just say give an equivalent sum to worthwhile organizations (new energy projects, public funding for the arts, etc.) This way all the fuck-ups can think something other than, how am I gonna scrape together the cash this month?

NO time for that these days.

Music is free (if you've already paid the cost to read this message here), then it's all love.

Allmusic.com isn't always the best; sometimes though they write these obituaries that just crush your heart in to little thc et. al soaked pieces.

I tried to make a remix of one of these songs once; then I thought, that's silly, I didn't know the guy or anything personally affecting in this stuff. He just bares his soul though; if this 5-percenter online reference guide reading is to be used in any way whatsoever, we've got to consult further sources.

I was standing by the window's edge...

It's a beautiful day for dusting off someone else's trash; that you paid for, because the music is all that matters, we all pay for it one way or another.

The point of money is to make things complex.

Stupid Fuck
To be on tour while at home or the inverse, most at ease on the road that is something to aspire to for anyone.
Poor Comma Usage
Despite the alarming number of tools on twitter, celebrity impersonators (all of you), there must be one who uses the social network itself as a tool; part-time douchebag Bill Simmons succeeds in this endeavor by quoting himself in recent NBA articles/mailbags.
Putridity
The chemical factories’ stench had disappeared from the morning air; or should I say that my sense of smell was last used effectively in late May of the Roman Calendar year 2008? Huelva had its moments of pure, unadulterated bliss; the rolling of an ‘n’ joint; as in, I had smoked the hypothetical infinite variable of a power series of 1.
Capoing the 8th fret
Complete selfishness has resulted in little more than a life of lonely doubts; the taker finds the giver ever willing. We are the fuckers, chanted in slightly detuned unison, echoes off and passes through the paper thin walls. Just waves now, far far away from the port, of pure nothingness running through everything. This is a dream? Get me back to Fort Lauterdale related stories of German holidays.

Obama says...

I didn't want to hurt you, oh yeah!

This is why you should listen to Teenage Fanclub.

WHAT?!?!?!?!!?!?

video game

I used to think that Guitar Hero and it's ilk were a horrifying development for anyone with pop culture nostalgia and a hit of fanboy desire lingering somewhere near the synaptic surface. Why, when one could practice playing guitar for some specific period of time (in the case of guitar hero) or hang out with your friends and play covers ("rock band") or take it to the next level and become a single band cover band (yuck, buttfucking crusty hetero hipsters...)? Now that pitchfork tells me that; 1) I'm a hypocrite for decrying hipsterdom's heinous anus expansion (POPPERS). 2) What if a shitload of people buy this stuff because it's cheaper than buying and maintaining real equipment? 3) It does pretty much all the work for you and rewards specialization/dedication. 4) It has a social element (gamers unite online and lord knows where else) 5) The Beatles got their own version, signed off by Paul Mccartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko (Plastic) Ono Lennon and Olivia Newton-John, I mean, Harrison.

Berlin offers a kind of cultural nourishment that my aching bones have been desiring since I set foot in Southern Spain's Southwestern nook that tourists the world over call "Andalucía" (often with the accent falling on the 'u' (Pixies Debaser) I found the DDR museum last night at 3:30 am strolling around unable to locate the proper way to arrive back home; no keys, no cash, just a strange bus ticket that somehow is acceptable to the driver no matter what. Sometimes the locals themselves omit the 'cía' and th-ay, "Omo Andalú!" (Somos Andaluz) (We are andalusian.) Speaking of bones, the milk in Spain tasted a little funny; it actually freaked me out. Then one day fresh milk randomly appeared in a bourgeois illusion fancy market; except they wilfully left out 'free' sample containers in a non-refrigerated area. German milk is delicious; I didn't know they had an A&P here too. So, maybe you think I'm talking about supermarkets too much, so then how can I really be absorbing culture? Well, I really just got here, and am experiencing a serious cerebral shock from all the various stimuli; people don't stare at me now on the street as if I am in the wrong place. "ESO QUÉ ES?"; with a slight crescendoing inflection on the final syllable.

Meal Time.

Reconstructing Ralston

Oh well, I kept drafting the same sad story that had you and me meeting at a birthday party for Michael Blue. He was wasted, he was falling down stairs, I was confused, John got asked if he was sporting “emo hair” it was a jarring experience for the both of us. Dude was like non of the others that I had encountered; he seemed real, wound up, in terms of projecting, touching and feeling. I got offered a night in a sorority and I turned it down, a girl from Shaker Heights, Ohio no surprise. I made a stop off near the Davis Street ‘El’, above the Fish Market, inside a courtyard iced over in the paltry winter. Apartment 2B; ‘B’ for Bennum, as I channeled my inner Agatha Christie. So what did I spy inside this Studio: The same YAMAHA keyboard owned by Matteo (that came later), and Epiphone Songbird®, a Heritage Casino-Style electric, no bass (oh, really?), a closet of shirts and pant so organized that I actually stopped and thought that I was the most cluttered piece of shit that ever had the misery of seeing the light of day. A Chuck Klosterman suggestion sheet on how to talk manly; Rodney Rogers may god bless, that was an example of the power of rhetoric. He said make a data disc if you wish, I said that’s benificient. Then he let me choose ooooooh, there was finally choice in the matter of man. It was all that mattered, the strangeness of it all, man he was the man it was ridiculous, well he was a hero and I was some charlatan who could help chart his thoughts; I gave him on bridge on a track where we went G-Bm7-Bb-C; like this. So I was thinking, yeah I TOO find Ben Kweller’s brand of power pop to be particularly spellbinding. He makes suggestions, he too has been an 8-year plus reader of the All Music Guide,m REDEMPTION. In the land of the swampy armpits of the late, great Capone, I found someone who would do commercials. HE had band posters; I would later get annoyed at the poor grammatical skills of Grandpa’s “La noche es oscura pero tu es beautiful.” I am high. Oh, ok. Push-Pull, reactions happening all over my mind. He has a record player, and a stack of Beatles LP’s, as well as
2000 by the French Kicks, with some poster. Oh, yeah he seemed to be the coolest person who had ever made human contact with me. He suggested we share the space, that was eternally kind. He didn’t ask for anything, he just kept it going, I too was going insane; we kept each other happy, somehow I was always happy, sometimes sad, but that’s what happens when you feel like the walking dead, wandering of the mind, it’s a beautiful beast. Joel, he was a mutual acquaintance. I clicked on “One Chord To Another” and there was something magical happening, yeah man, yeah, that was a fucking great album, I had only heard one track from Shayne Weinstein’s lovely library of music, “Everything You’ve Done Wrong” a blast of horns and an ole-time feel progression that was changing my mind about what individuals were capable of in a group setting. So I sought to seek out the idea, 4 one man bands. Spinning like turntables with computers inside; not regurgitating, but leaving things to chance through the simplicity of the framework; 12 notes, chords, scales, that’s that. Also, I’d been reading Thoms Pynchon’s V. recently, that summer it was that theory book, the Vonnegut, the Greenwood Tragedy (the bloodiest race riot in the history of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma), Tom Robbins and Foppish Dandy Chuck Klosterman. Also, other random shit, books on the Beatles and related arts. He had two Powerbooks, an 8 track digital m-box type, but higher-def and, like some kind of modern snakecharmer, neatly organized cables of all types necessary in performing and recording; 1/4-1/4, XLR-1/4, XLRmale-XLRfemale, of varying lengths and color schemes. Joel had a PA, Mike had a kit, I had the bass, John had EVERYTHING else, it seemed like things were weighted a little funny; oh, they were. He had a close-knit musical belief structure to Nat, who may or may not be training to be a luthier as we speak; a profession I hope to follow one day. Graham Parsons, lead in “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” by the Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and solo-work with Emmy Lou-Harris singing harmonies, that guy was on to something, before he got derailed by a crippling drug addiction. So, what did he see before he found the abyss, wandereres wanted to know. We watched an informing documentary, his pops was a mover and a shaker amongst corporate/Washington (It was the post-war era, industry and government were like birds of a feather) and so he led a privileged life leading to his acceptance at Harvard, he wouldn’t last a year. He befriended Keith Richards, in a deep way, and like so many others couldn’t keep up with skeletor’s threshold for pain. So, he burned out eventually, in pretty sad fashion, getting in a bad way with heroin. He probably envisioned himself having more significance when he was dead than when he was alive; poor sap.

FOPPISH DANDY

DUNCECASTING #1 of 10: Too Long To Twitter, Too Short to Die
I’m your host, Dun Dudnick, here with me on the boards is Algo and Beat-O on the ritmo kit/celery sticks. Let’s hope I don’t get too excited and jump in to a door frame.

Audio Chronology:
Funkenstein; the first trans-atlantic Bird of a Feather co-production by Carsten and Beat-O et. al.
Rivers Cuomo made an ‘a capella’, and the logic came to give it the typical slacker treatment.
Albert King & SRV talking about what it’s all about for the worker bee.
Hot Sugar refixes another anthem of our youth, like only he can.
10CC off the album Sheet Music, “Wild Old Men”; Ratatat sampled that guitar solo, no?
Abbreviated TRANS, for my sake and everyone else’s. Neil Young (!) in Berlin (!) in June!
Nico’s “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams”, a lushly orchestrated piece that Danger Doom sampled on ‘Korn Dogs’ a track that I used to listen to a fair amount in my time as a summer child.
De La Soul is Dead! De La Soul is Dead man! I don’t want to deconstruct Born Like This, I want to praise it for clueing me in to the importance of Prince Paul in making real music again.
Studio 54 in Berlin, June 29th, why not?

Keep On

Things always take a turn for the worst, before they ever seem like they can even get better.

The waterfall has gracefully returned to my life in a way that leads me to believe in the power of inanimate objects; not outright materialism, but I also think that Thomas Pynchon's 'V' is excellent, so far.

People are calling me out for making mistakes on message boards, they are right.

So, I'm reinventing this blog from now on; 3 audiovisual posts and 1 essay every week. Music will continue to find its way on through, and maybe there will be posts by Newhouse.

Cackling Hens!

So, there's more basketball blogs to read these days than ever; TRUEHOOP is still the truth, but I'll be damned if I haven't completely fallen for Bethlehem Shoals style of writing; it seems that every sportswriter finds his/her own way to incorporate popular culture/obscure culture in a way that some part of the population will enjoy, and I think I've found my kind of basketball writer.

If my girlfriend doesn't visit I'm gonna start compulsively masturbating in public, since I work with kids this might get dicey. LESS THAN TWO WEEKS!

I cannot fucking wait to play the Sheraton II again, it's been so long! The JP-90 is also going to be a treat, for those who don't know, that might be the greatest bass Fender ever made in 1990; the poplar body weighs less than 6 lbs., throw on an aftermarket bridge (I put on a badass II, thanks to some weird, but kind metal dude at a Sam Ash in Pennsylvania)

Just what are chicharrones? How about churros? Cheerios? Beer and go? Fear and loathe your way to the top with this lovely Bay-Area banger.

There are spanish titties flapping around like crazy on the tv. It's kind of silly.

Al Sugiero's 2nd to last daydream

Stop Trying to Set The Scene!
Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil met high-pH water in to off white harmony. The supposed son of Galt MacDermot® was trying to look more like an extra in a “Soul Glo®” commercial than his DNA deemed necessary, or, it could be said, within reason. The gleaning off his pharmacy-last minute purchased aviator lenswear, showed the reflection of a pool perfectly mirroring the skyline and up in to the ghastly moon in the daytime. I was wandering by, the recent recipient of vending machine money from a 2nd-cousin’s ginger-besepectacled high-times reading friend, when I noticed the bottle of tanning oil falling in to the pool, it’s cap removed long before the oil and water made their ‘salsa picante’ in the side that read “No DIVING!” So what the hell was I gonna get at this third-world COCA-COLA® vending station with several sandy pieces of mother of pearl that I assured were a type of New-World Wampum that could be exchanged for any number of beverages from a particular brand-name dispenser that was savagely displayed all over their shell’s duller side. I made my graceful way up to the machine, diddled over the dials, with names that read like they were plucked from Denis Diderot’s encyclopedian armpit: SPRITE®, FANTA®, MR. PIB®, SQUIRT® and DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO® RED SODA WATER. There was a slot for the shell; two of them got me one 20. Oz bottle of my choosing; I hit “C4”, think of Chris Bosh, Chris Rock and taking off my flip-flops in the shade long enough to have the clunk of my drink down near my ankles awaken me. The red-sunglasses man is happy that I got him a Mr. Pib after having suggested I “surprise” him with my choice; this is getting gay. My 2nd-Cousin holds out an expecting hand, I push her out of the way as the steamroller comes crashing in to the north wall of the mini-compound/time-share luxury suites/micro-lending for local vendors in beautiful parts of Central Africa. Before I could get a word out, there were at my throat, smoke was pouring in like an exhaust pipe and I awoke coughing my head off.

This post is dedicated to those who made the transition from high-level performance in a particular sport at college, but made a change for their professional careers.

Example one, Carolina Panther (for now)/UNC Power Forward Julius Peppers, who had the grand misfortune of playing during the Kris Lang era.

Antonio Gates is considered by many to be the premier tight end, when healthy, in the NFL today. I was always an Alge Crumpler guy, but oh well.

No clip of him playing ball found, sadly.

What about this guy? That's right former Detroit Piston 12th man Darvin Ham; he went to the Hun School!

Ok this post fell apart fast, but it's fun to dig for crossover appeal.

Long Foam

Today's long foam ramble is brought to you by: Cheese Fries

Writing is fighting for your life, that’s what David Foster Wallace told me, and that, is some shit; this is one of the possible ideas that developed after recently speed-reading Infinite Jest, a technique I learned at Oberlin that didn’t help me with the classes, but did help me read for pleasure with superior speed, he was grappling with depression, he was using tennis as a mirror shining on your self-perceptions and how you believe you are being seen by those who see you, like Tom Robbins, Alistair Crowley and Ornette Coleman used the mirror that we call the moon to make magic. Otherwise, you are probably wasting your time, or maybe there is a greater process to it I should re-read it, it’s only the first read, or is it a labyrinth?

These things are the paradoxes that will continue as long as the paradoxical existence of my own does: RE-Phrase, why do I exist? There are initial questions that make everything under the sun fair game; in the end, what you understand is that a routine is the only way to accomplish something over a long period of time; many people find this through all kinds of channels, mine seem to be so very varied, but it’s not quite like that, I don’t think. Stanley Fish was writing about his on his NYT blog recently.

I just need space, and I realize that I’ve met people who make me feel like living, which means I’ve met the right people to die by, take the bullet, kick down the nightclub paparazzi like Kevin Costner did for Whitney.

Bobby Crosby probably listens to Pet Sounds; with a name and game like that he just
wasn’t born for these times.

Kevin Youkilis is reminding me of Matt Geiger in a big way.

Chris Andersen is a monster on the boards. I wonder if David Stern is scared of Crystal Meth, compared to traditional perfomance-enhancing drugs for professionals.

Kenyon Martin is Wario; Darius Miles is Waluigi.

I shudder to think of extending this in to dinosaur territory; Antoine Walker getting held up at gun point isn’t funny.

College was a playful tragicomedy, I suppose; kind of like that Unicorn’s album, “Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Dead?” They figured out a way to ask a question and get people bothered in a way that maybe led to some level of satisfaction, kind of like sex, yes it could be said that if you’re all alone and you’d rather not knock one out on your own, aka home run derby simulator, aka bowling, aka drinking, alias Bo Shanks, the good stuff.

I live in the middle of nowhere, that’s what I think, because the people are getting together over crazy false idols’ screaming prophets; these days, they’re just trying to rehash some computer age falsetto, it’s less impressive now than it would have been without all the digital advances,

you can’t fool all the people all the time, but maybe it’s nice to fool yourself sometimes with some friends. So the first album gets dropped one way or the other, the memories get put in to place for something, how you go about responding to your synaptic fibers dictates how you’ll strum it,

How come people are so quick to love Dilla's Gazillionear beat when Return of The Gangster had essentially the same loop almost 10 years ago. It all somehow relates, in my head, to a FREE DARKO POST.

also who you choose to surround yourself with in your new post-apocalyptic world; shit is starting to move so fast, you gotta stay focused on something or you’re gonna get the spinsies and pass out, this is why old people/a youthful John Lennon could be seen as sleeping a lot,

this also relates to what you do to make you tired, some construe this as work, others as self-destruction, others as an opportunity to get known.

Noise, Noise, Noise! The slow, broken march to one’s inevtiable end; that’s what Leonard Cohen said, others followed suit, in slightly more dramatic fashion.

Nipsey Hussle?

Bump

I really like the new DOOM; I also happen to like the snakey, sparse bass playing on the track "Bumpy's Message" in which Freddie Foxxx sounds like he's fucking dying.

I keep bumping in to NYT books articles on David Foster Wallace or vacation homes.

What's up with AIDS research? Are we making any improvements lately? What about Larry David in a Woody Allen movie?

What about falling asleep at the wheel? What about Conservative Oberlin grads speaking their mind on Senator Specter? Right here, Michelle!

I can't stop reading deadspin, I CAN'T! Will Leitch is the writer of things that hurt my brain in that soft, subtle way. So of course they switch it up and let someone else write about a derival, but intriguing sub-plot of ten human body parts.

He is good at dunking with tremendous ferocity, not unlike a feral hamster in heat on the fourth of july.

Who is Ricky Rubio?

He had a turnover in the closing minute of his team DKV Joventut's 3 point win over Gran Canarias while they were down 2 and they still won!

Who is Steven Curry?

Hey, I went to high school with Derrick. One time we played Beat It, yours truly on guitar and himself on the kit. It was a hit with at least 20% of the minorities in attendance at said private K-12 institution.

Everyone likes Galt MacDermot and noone really can say why; allmusic will say his brand of "no-funk" finds its appeal from being so damn cheesy and uncool, people who use the full 10% of their brain would call this unpretentious on the part of señor MacDermot and his personal crew of flunky session players.

Dan The Automator and Prince Paul are blatant fans of the man's jams.

He also wrote the music to the musical HAIR, people younger than myself, who didn't perform in a high school/summer stock/amateur basement version of it, would probably know of the song "Age Of Aquarius" thanks to Judd Apatow directing Steve Carrel, Paul Rudd, Faux-MC Hammer (that poor bastard, might as well have played I NEED $) in The 40 Year Old Virgin

CLick here to add your name to the list of fans of the man's work "Shapes of Rhythm"

basketball

I feel like one of those fucking kids in Newsies posting links to a Bethlehem Shoals Sporting News® Post, but I think he is writing about the best sub-plot of the entire playoffs so far. Remember the Fish that Saved Pittsburgh!

I can't comment on the playoffs in any capacity because I'm isolated from the immediate impact the viewing of a game delivers. I DO want to watch Denver play, really badly; almost as much as I can't believe they're actually doing this playoff thing without Iverson; the Jadakis/AI corollary only grows stronger over time, I don't know why, but I always thought the most prophetic thing that ever was uttered by Kiss and Styles P. in tandem went:

J: You might find your man dead in the ocean
P(A little too far away from his microphone): IT BE AIGHT THOUGH
J: You know dead rappers get better promotion.

I wish I wouldn't feel the need to complain about having to work an hour on Friday, because I'm a selfish child, but listen to birds of feather, why not? It's linked below from an earlier day.

Disk Space is a funny thing; so was Marcel Proust, most likely. He has the only speaking part in "Silent Movie"; is Mel Brooks a genius or what?!!?!

Anyhoo, more music...I don't know...now!

thanks ryan welsh!

As I laugh/wince at Ghostface's Korean accent on the track "Angels" off of Born Like This and that earlier compilation they put it on together, the name escapes me, I must also think of things more relevant to real people like you, the reader. Here's an artist doing cool shit that feels like Fractals would approve.

Decline

Beirut is one of several names that is associated with Beer Pong, a drinking game that jumped the shark long before Rick Reilly was encouraging his sons to flick their way to victory; if ONLY that could have been a lesson to them about finger fucking!

Beirut is one of several names that guy from New Mexico has assumed when recording his lush orchestrations that incorporate elements of Balkan Rhythms, unusual horn/string combinations and one of those very once in a while kind of voices.

Beirut is one of several places I cannot locate on a map without some type of aural aid device.

Jacques Brel is the secret behind all three of these examples; his "Seasons in The Sun" is all I can hear in my mental tapes when I contemplate Canadian Pop in the '70s, even though the performance we are all so familiar with is by one Terry Jacks. Peep his allmusic.com profile if time allows for enhanced factoids and related artists.

Here's a certain work of his that you can find all about by clicking through!

Pavo con alliolli

When you want to figure out a room's acoustic tendencies you can stick a microphone next to a speaker that runs a feedback loop of the single phrase you wish to have heard perfectly clear by as many of those in attendance as possible; "The reason we're all here is to get along."

So, the blog can have it's own feedback loop if it wants to with the uploads.

Here's one from a band that featured a gay guy, Elliott Smith and a guy who married a member of a band that I always thought was full of lesbians, Sleater-Kinney.

Anyhoo, it's here.

Speaking of Portland, who's excited for the playoffs? I for one, having not witnessed a single regular season game, don't know what to think; what's the playoffs without either Mike Dunleavy?

now look at yourself

I put up a fake link for an album I recently completed yesterday; that was wrong of me, but I don't really think anyone is reading the fine print carefully enough to care about these kinds of things; whoever said, "jews have no rhythm" should have thought about non-metered aspects of timing.

Mom hoped I'd become a writer; it's not looking likely. Dad wants me to be a hard worker; a diminishing return. Max is always excited, but cynic in the grand scheme of things; that's life.

A few thoughts on this album, life and the process of placing oneself in the vast continuum of cultural identity;

I am 0.
Rosa is number one.
One minus zero is harmless
Zero minus one is only games in your head.

I want to thank the following people for making this hour or so of digestion possible; Adrian Pacia, Nick Koenig, Lena Leson, Taka Yasuzawa, Saul Flores (You're still a young man!), Mike Blumenthal, Joel Handley, John Bennum, Mike Garcia, Barry Sanders, Darren Dutch Daulton, Mickey Rooney, Mickey Rourke, Louis Weiss, Alex Visotzky, Burton L (the holy sprit), Samuel Crane Newhouse, NOT Rafa Capo, Derrick Tuttle (you shredder, you think I forgot you cause I was drunk...), Baron Davis, Tango & Cash.

I want to thank the following animals; The Iberian Lynx, The Elephant (a process unto itself), and Mick Foley.

Can you tell I'm stalling while it uploads? Damn stolen Spanish Wi-Fi in sterererero.

There's an "artist statement" in the genre section of the album if you listen to it in iTunes; or read it in installments with your media player of choice.

Everything is in parenthesis in this phase of my life here in Huelva, Andalucía.
